Changes to Free School Meals

Please note that from 1st April 2018 Free School Meal Legislation has changed
People in receipt of Universal Creditwill no longer automatically qualify for Free School Meals. They will be subjected to a checking process where any net (take home) earnings which are included in their Universal Credit Payment are taken into consideration.
People In receipt of Universal Credit should continue to make their claims to Free School Meals and please continue to promote take up. We will make our usual checks through systems which are updated to reflect this change and will advise accordingly.
The rules for people in receipt of other benefits such as Income Support etc have not changed and they are still subjected to the annual limit of £16,190

Howeverplease note the following
All children in receipt of free school meals as at 1st April 2018 will be protected until 31st March 2022. This means that Free School Meals for that child will not change until at least that date.

Any new children who are awarded Free School Meals from 1st April onwards will also be protected until 31st March 2022. This means that Free School Meals for that child will not change until at least that date.

You may have siblings where one is protected under the new rules (Free School Meals protected until 31st March 2022) but new claims for other children do not qualify due to the new earnings limit in Universal Credit

Any queries regarding the above should be directed to the Benefits Team on 01429 284188 or benefits@hartlepool.gov.uk
