Year 5: Mrs Lambe Term: Spring 2006

Your child will be studying the following topics this term:

  • Numeracy: Know the square numbers up to 10 x 10. Recall the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables and recall the corresponding division facts. To calculate mentally a difference by counting on, numbers close to multiples of 1000. To use informal written methods to record and explain addition and subtractions.
  • Literacy: In reading, children will learn to talk about how the writer has developed the character through action, description and dialogue. To use skimming and scanning skills to find and highlight the information needed. In writing, children will use well-chosen phrases and vocabulary to engage the reader and to also use appropriate grammatical features for different text types.
  • Science: `Earth, Sun and Moon'; `Changing Sounds'
  • ICT: Analysing Data and Asking Questions; Monitoring Environmental Conditions/Data Logging
  • Religious Knowledge: Jesus as a Special Person. The parables and conflict stories. Judaism and Hinduism. The Church Year; Lent, Holy Week and Easter.
  • History: `Who were the Ancient Greeks?'
  • Geography: `What is in the News?'
  • Design & Technology: `Musical Instruments.' To learn about the construction of a range of musical instruments, and how different sounds can be created.
  • Art: `Containers.' To explore the craft tradition of making vessels and containers as in the Ancient Greek period. [Art Shirt please]
  • Music: `Journey Into Space.' Exploring Sound Sources to create effect.
  • P.E.: Dance - Theme is `Journey Into Space.'
  • PSHCE: To know that we live in a democratic society. To be able to make safe and well considered decisions regarding drugs and to know about the role of voluntary and community bodies e.g. Greenpeace/Environmental Issues.

Homework: Children have a Planner/Diary to record when all homework tasks are set and the expected date for completion. Parents are asked to sign this book weekly and encourage chidren to take responsibility for completing tasks and handing them in on time. Children also have a personal reding diary which will help develop their own choice of author/genre and to be able to make judgements and record their own opeinions on their choice of reading material. It is expected that children will read at least three evenings per week for enjoyment and make at least one entry per week in their diary. Regular reading will not only improve your child's reading skills but also writing and spelling ability.

Important Requests: Children do become dehydrated during the school day and this can be detrimental to their learning. Please could you ensure your child has a `sports-type' water bottle in school each day which is also taken home and sterilised frequently for health and safety reasons.

Educational Visits: This term the children will be visiting Wynyard Park Planetarium and Observatory. Thank you for supporting this event, which will greatly compliment this term's science curriculum.
